Grassroots Effort Helps Feed Oregon Horses

Financially strapped horse owners in Central Oregon are getting help feeding their horses this winter thanks to a hay donation program established by a Bend couple. The program distributes bales of hay, either donated by individuals or purchased with cash contributions, free of charge to horse owners caught short.

"The rescues here are all full, and our goal is to keep horses in need on their own properties," said Meghan Evans who established the program, along with her husband Doug, a veterinarian.

Owners receive one month's worth of free hay for each of their horses and can reapply according to need. In exchange, they must permit site visits to verify their need and that the horses are being fed.

So far, nine horse owners have received hay from the 7 tons donated to the cause. Evans expects the program to continue at least through the spring.

"Then, if donations allow, we'll set up a permanent nonprofit," she said.

To donate hay, call Evans at 541/408-6079 or e-mail grassroots@bendbroadband.com
