)
- These are great questions, sounds like you've really been thinking a lot! I'll try to keep it really simple... The Zone 5 issue is going to take quite a bit of
approach and retreat, but instead of starting in front of the gate, start her on the other side, facing you. Then bring her a step or two forward, and quickly back her up again to her starting spot. Rest, wait, then do it again increasing the number of steps she takes forward and then immediately backing her up to the starting spot and resting again. This creates a 'safe spot' which she will start to
want to get to. So now, step by step, zone by zone, pretty soon your horse will be backing all the way through the gate by herself... and once she's really confident you'll be able to start with her tail to the gate. I would give it a good 4 - 7 sessions before you can expect that. Then, every time you go to a new thing to back through, start from the other side. This way she'll start to build a lot more
confidence in you and what you ask her to do, otherwise it just feels like too much
pressure.
The Circling Game. Believe it or not, this can be one of the most challenging games because it brings together all the primary games,
#1,
#2, &
#3. So when you have an issue, try to break it down into which game is the problem. To me, it seems as if it's the Driving Game
#3 because the Send is difficult, but I'll bet it's really the Friendly Game
#1. In this case, going to
higher phases does not work. You actually have to do a lot less and take more time. You've noted that she's really unconfident in the 'Allow' so this is a big tip off, as is the crowding. Go back and check out your L1 short-range Circling Game (Level 1 pack) and do this for a while. As she gets more confident you can allow more rope to feed out, but don't be in a hurry, building confidence takes time. You have to go painfully slow in the beginning and then your horse will start to offer you more. If you try to
make it happen, she'll lose
confidence.
